Big file copy to CD

Bill,

CD burning in Windows XP does not have the ability to span CDs. You may need to use a third-party program.

I have a new computer and am trying to transfer files and settings from the
old to the new using Transfer Wizard. Both machines are Windows XP with the
latest updates. I first tried the recommended serial machine to machine
connection. Transfer stopped at 0.24% complete (with 38 hours transfer time
still needed!)). I next tried to use CD's -- Wizard only allows
3.5 in. floppies in the "removable disk" selection, so I tried the remaining
"other" selection and entered the drive letter of my CD RW drive. Wizard
collected and compacted all the old computer files and then declined to copy
them to the CD saying disk was corrupted or not present or etc.
Final try was to use Wizard to compress and copy the old computer files to a
file on the hard drive. Worked fine, but the resulting file needs 2+ CD's to
hold it. If anyone out there uses Transfer Wizard and has any suggestions I
would appreciate hearing from you.

Is there any way to copy a 1.5 GByte file to multiple CD's?

I had the same problem when migrating from 98 to XP just recently. My
solution:

1. In Windows 98, download a trial version of Nero burning software version
6, which works for 30 days before you need to pay for it.

2. Use the transfer wizard to create a backup in a temporary file on the C:
drive.

3. Use Nero to backup the temporary file to CD, using as many disks as
required.

4. Set up XP, then install the trial version of Nero again.

5. Use Nero to restore the temporary file from your CDs to your C: drive.

6. Use the transfer wizard to restore the temporary file to the original
directories. Job done.

Worked like a charm, and cost absolutely nothing.

Cheers

WINZIP is great for that - spans CDs & reassembles them
too. Also can encrypt and password protect.
