i am looking for a spec for a powerful database server (dual cpu, scsi
hd (or any other), big memory, good motherboard). The server is to be
used as a database server. so speed and reliability is important.
Any idea about good specification please.

Maybe check out Dell servers. Good luck.

If you're looking to use a $$$ DB product like MS or Oracle, shop
around with HP, Dell, and IBM. They may be able to cut you a package
deal. Depending on how conservative your company is, you want
hardware than is certified by the DB vender.

How 'big' is BIG ???
Liberate an existing 'one', or from scratch ???

Who's code ... DIY or 3rd party ???
Do "you" get the source code ???

Whats to be the backup/restore Plan ???

Ad Nauseum.

Of all the hdwr/sftwr issues, I'd put "source" on top.
Vendors disappear.

DIY( =well= doc'd ) and Oracle for my $$$.
Employees 'rotate', in and out.
Abit mobo & AMD dual core, rack&tray for HDs.
