Bi-Directional Printing permissions

Can anyone shed some light on this problem please.

The setup is a Win2K domain with Win2K client machines. We have a
networked print server which has a Sato Label Printer attached.

The problem is that users can only print to the printer if BiDirectional
communication is off. This is no good since the users then won't be
able to see status messages from the printer. If BiDirectional
communication is on they cannot print at all.

If I logon as Administrator however they work fine with BiDirectional
communication on and I get the appropriate status messages.

Is there a user permission required for enabling them to print with
BiDirectional on at all?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,
This is an interesting one. I know there have been cases where having
bidirectional printing enabled has resulted in issues, but I am not sure if
your particular observations have been documented. The underlying reason
would be discovered with a network sniffer (if you have that kind of
experience).
There have been problems with 3rd-party port monitors interfering with
bidirectional printing. Try deleting these and see what happens.

Check the following registry key for third-party monitors. Remove any
non-default monitors:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
The default port monitors are:
- AppleTalk Printing Devices (When Services for Macintosh is installed)
- BJ Language Monitor
- Local Port
- PJL Language Monitor
- Standard TCP/IP Port
- USB Monitor
- Windows NT Fax Monitor (when applicable)
