When I first got Vista and new gaming machine this would only occur after 2
or 3 maps. Now I can`t even log in or play my favorite game, why?I already
tried run as an adminastrator. Please help I can`t even load FEAR.I`m ready to
dump Vista.

We really need more details.

BF2142 falling over after 2 or 3 maps could be due to it running out of
memory when it hits the 2GB app limit.

What happens when you try and login? Application crash again? What changes
have you made to the system, have you tried System Restore back to when it
was working? What other applications are running.

When I try to log in I get same message "BF2142exe"has stopped working.I made
no changes to pc. How do I restore back to when it was working? Also I have
2GB Corsair Pro PC2--6400 DDR2 800MHz ram.If I had more memory would this
eliminate my problem? Thanks for reply too.

I am having the exact same problem (see my thread "random game crashes").
I think that this crash has something to do with the latest nvidia forceware
drivers (158.24), and it applies to ALL 3d hardware accelerated application
(mostly games then...).
2gb ram is MORE than all current games need, and the crash is definetly NOT
related to not having enough ram. More ram will NOT solve this. Have you
tried turning of hardware acceleated sound (in bf2142), as this might
eliminate drive3r conflicts (i have yet to cheack this).

to find the error log, start search "event viewer" and look in
errors>application to find the error logs. they SHOULD cite a source for the
error, but probably will not in our case (mine just have a blank and say the
error isnt there...)

thanks

Press Start and type System Restore.

No, my thinking was the application was exceeding the limit. This has
effected games like Supreme Commander and a few other memory intensive
games. The way to check would be to monitor memory usage up until the game
crashes, if the application alone breaks the 2GB limit it'll probably crash.

To get around this it will need to be compiled with the large_address_aware
flag, in conjunction with 64-bit Windows, or 32-bit Windows with the 3GB
flag so applications can use more.

Either way if you have the resource monitor running in the background while
playing it, you'll be able to rule out that either way.

though

W/system restore if you mean "start search"it doesn`t find it.Please type
like I`m a moron because I am.And as far as large address aware where do I
find how to do this?I have 32 bit Vista. Please don`t bail out on me.I`m
trying and some of what you are suggesting is beyond my pc abilties .

Try Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
Is search working at all?

Try a restore point before the early crashes started happening, that will
help rule out software issues.

I've searched across the internet but can't find any reports of BF2142
exceeding 2GB, so I think we can rule that out for now.

MY RECCOMENDATIONS
also try running other games/3d applications.
to test for things other than graphics errors download Prime95
(http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103) and run one instance of
torture test per core in your cpu. if any faults are found then we can
eliminate any graphics driver/card issues.
if that doesnt show any errors try downloading 3dmark06
(http://www.futuremark.com/products/3dmark06/) assuming you have a working
connction/lots of time.
run both of them

hope this helps

Search is working.I was sucessful w/sytem restore but it only goes back less
than a month so my BF2142 problems started befoe that.I tried it and still
error message.I`m bummin out....hope I can run new direct x10 games like
Crysis.Or even Enemy Quake Wars coming out soon.Running outdated games like
Day of defeat w/this kick ass new machine is boring. If I can`t XP is
back.Wish I new why FEAR and BF2142 won`t work.Thanks though,Best Regards
Brett

I`ve run 3dmark2006 before w/great results.Better than my friends pc`s but
they can still run games like FEAR & BF2142.Thanks appreciate help....I`m
bummin out.

Well I'm guessing its another application that has been installed since that
is interfering with it. You could shutting down any other processes running
as you from the Task Manager or try re-installing but in this case perhaps
it is better to go back to Windows XP.

Alright, I just got windows vista a little while ago and was having the same
problem you were except with Dark messiah of might and magic. I tried running
as admin, going to xp mode, and downloading drivers. In fact, I didnt need to
any of these. My game would not work becuase I did not download the latest
patch of the game, and it wouldnt run for the old patchs. Go find the newest
patch, download, and make sure you have the other drivers for your vid card.
Let me know if this helped.

I had a similar problem to this and I must have BF2142 working.
I have the following setup...

CPU: Pentium® 4 (540) w/HT (3.2GHz 800FSB)
RAM: 4 x 512MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics card: nVidia 256MB 7800 GTX
Sound card: Sound Blaster Audigy
Hard drive/s: 250GB SATA at 7200 RPM
Motherboard: BTX Motherboard
Monitor/s: Dell 24
CD/DVD Player: 1 - DVD+RW/-RW, 2 - DVD-ROM DVD-R/CD-RW
Mouse: Logitech G7 Laser Cordless Mouse
Keyboard: Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Headset: Logitech 980158-0403 Internet Chat Headset
Internet: Comcast 13MB Down 1MB Up
Case: Dell XPS 400

After installing Windows Ultimate and Office 2007, I tried BF2142.
I had to immediately update my video driver, audio driver, and
PunkBuster. PunkBuster also comes with a handy Service instead
of a .EXE file like it does on other versions of Windows. Read link for
more information...

http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsvcfaq.php

Lastly, I had to create a Games account. Why? Well it is good to
have at least one user that doesn't run any of the cutesy things
that Windows has to offer (Aero off, Anti-Virus off, Firewall - always
off in lieu of router, Desktop Background off, System Tray icons off).
That tends to do the trick. I then launched BF2142 and after Optimizing
Shaders, I am good. I also set the Audio in BF2142 to "Software".

I also don't run the graphics on high anymore simply cause I want a
smooth and consistent game especially on Titan maps. So...

BF2142 Checklist:

0) Good Vista Install
1) Updated Audio and Video drivers
2) BF2142 Game Install
3) Patch to 1.25
4) PunkBuster Update
5) PunkBuster Service
6) Optional Northern Strike Expansion Install
7) Patch to 1.25 for Northern Strike
8) Tune Game via in game Options

Both Vista and BF2142 require 512 MB of RAM. If you double eac,h you
come to 2048 MB or 2GB. The reason I say that is so you log out of
other accounts and login to a bare bones "Games" account. You don't
want anything else running. The good thing about Vista is, if your need
more RAM, go down to your friendly IT shop and pick up a 2GB memory
stick (thumb drive) as Vista will treat that like RAM due to the new
technology called "Ready Boost".
