I had a similar problem to this and I must have BF2142 working.
I have the following setup...
CPU: Pentium® 4 (540) w/HT (3.2GHz 800FSB)
RAM: 4 x 512MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics card: nVidia 256MB 7800 GTX
Sound card: Sound Blaster Audigy
Hard drive/s: 250GB SATA at 7200 RPM
Motherboard: BTX Motherboard
Monitor/s: Dell 24
CD/DVD Player: 1 - DVD+RW/-RW, 2 - DVD-ROM DVD-R/CD-RW
Mouse: Logitech G7 Laser Cordless Mouse
Keyboard: Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Headset: Logitech 980158-0403 Internet Chat Headset
Internet: Comcast 13MB Down 1MB Up
Case: Dell XPS 400
After installing Windows Ultimate and Office 2007, I tried BF2142.
I had to immediately update my video driver, audio driver, and
PunkBuster. PunkBuster also comes with a handy Service instead
of a .EXE file like it does on other versions of Windows. Read link for
more information...

Lastly, I had to create a Games account. Why? Well it is good to
have at least one user that doesn't run any of the cutesy things
that Windows has to offer (Aero off, Anti-Virus off, Firewall - always
off in lieu of router, Desktop Background off, System Tray icons off).
That tends to do the trick. I then launched BF2142 and after Optimizing
Shaders, I am good. I also set the Audio in BF2142 to "Software".
I also don't run the graphics on high anymore simply cause I want a
smooth and consistent game especially on Titan maps. So...
BF2142 Checklist:
0) Good Vista Install
1) Updated Audio and Video drivers
2) BF2142 Game Install
3) Patch to 1.25
4) PunkBuster Update
5) PunkBuster Service
6) Optional Northern Strike Expansion Install
7) Patch to 1.25 for Northern Strike
8) Tune Game via in game Options
Both Vista and BF2142 require 512 MB of RAM. If you double eac,h you
come to 2048 MB or 2GB. The reason I say that is so you log out of
other accounts and login to a bare bones "Games" account. You don't
want anything else running. The good thing about Vista is, if your need
more RAM, go down to your friendly IT shop and pick up a 2GB memory
stick (thumb drive) as Vista will treat that like RAM due to the new
technology called "Ready Boost".
