Admittedly I'm not current on Malaysian law but surely they
can't regularly conduct business like that? Where would it
end but in chaos?
Believe me, it is chaotic. Most of the dealers here are hit and run
operators. Some are good ones but they are like diamonds, hard to come
by. Actually I went to the shop with intention of buying Seagate but
the guy said he only had Maxtor and he assured me that it is good and
quiet.
True it was my own mistake to be too lazy to shop around and to be so
gullible. So, I did give myself a kick in the butt... not a really
hard one though!
Which complaints? Ever few months one brand or other has
some user all steamed up and starting a thread on a web
forum if not usenet, then as always, it turns into everyone
who had one of those fail chiming in, but that doesn't
suggest the other brands are bulletproof either.
You're right on that point. Every brand does have some disgruntled
customers and I've come to think that luck plays a part too. My two
40gb ATA100 Seagate (3 years old) are so quiet I can really hear a pin
drop. And fast too.
For it to be DOA, I'd suspect something fishy, or rough
handling, not which brand it is.
Well, it wasn't exactly dead. That is the trouble. If it was dead, I
would have insisted on a refund or do something more drastic than
just walking away. When I went back to him, he said the crunching
noise is normal and conveniently forgot what he said before the sale.
Once of these days, when I have nothing better to do, I'd record the
sound, convert it to a .wav file and let you guys enjoy the Maxtor
cacophony.
BTW, I hope that Seagate won't go down the tube with the recent
merger.
