I have read that scanpst is a very old tool and doesn't do a very good
job of cleanup after a crash. Can anyone confirm this and recommend
better tools.

As an individual, I an afford a "reasonable" price for software, but
not the $250 I saw for one such utility.

Scanpst.exe works very well - I don't know where you get the idea it doesn't
work.

The only time it fails is when your .pst file is irreparably broken or when
it resides on a bad sector that you cannot recover using checkdisk.

One reason to make frequent backups with Outlook completely closed.

I once looked at a web site for a utility (pretty pricey, as I recall)
that claims that scanpst does not do a very good job on lost data
recovery. Perhaps I was guilty of being naive this one time, even
though I am not a newbie in general.

Agree absolutely. I actually do a daily backup of my OL file onto
tape.

There are situations in which a commercially-available PST recovery utility
can surpass SCANPST in its recovery ability. That doesn't mean that SCANPST
is always worse.
