I'm trying to make files with the highest video-audio quality and wasn't sure
which was the best....saving the file as a Windows Media file, or DV-AVI? I
never tried AVI before so I don't know if it's just as good with a bigger
file size or what the advantages are.

Theoretically DV AVI is the best output format if your input movie is
also DV AVI. However saving DV AVI from Movie Maker suffers with a small
gerneration loss of dropping a frame from each clip.
