I would say that as long as a motherboard offers the connections you
need (right number of whichever ports you may want, and reasonable
memory extensions for some expansions), the choice does not really
matter unless you wantto practice some overclocking.

A guess the chipsets are Via for A8V and Nvidia for A8N. I have been
satisfied with both my former A7V and my present A8N-VM CSM, for the
same type of needs as you, so I think I would buy now anything *other*
than Asus, because they are expensive and cannot justify it by anything
else than almost useless tools. I would probably MSI or Asrock, which
are more affordable here and allow to us money for other expenses.
Taiwanese assemblers do. Just my two cents.

I have both here, and have no issues with either. If you're not aware, the
A8V has an AGP slot, and the A8N-E has a PCI Express16 slot, so if you're
looking to re-use an AGP video card, the choice is made for you. OTOH, if
you're going for a new video card as well, PCI Express is the present and
(near) future, so go for that.

I suggest an Asus A8N-VM CSM. Stable, handles DDR400 no problem, has
good video for what you want in a computer. Works great with my 4200X2
(dummied down Toledo). I'm using a 7600GT video card and 2gig of memory
because I occassionally need to extra boost for some games.

Unless you have a particular AGP video card you're in love with and have
to use, there's no need for an A8V. My daughter's computer is an A8V w/
5700 ultra and an A64 3200+ and it works OK. I used it for a long time
before giving it to her and never had a problem. So IMO its stable
enough.

A8N-E has no real-world advantages over the A8N-VM CSM for your
applicaiton. It does require a PCI-E video card which adds to the cost
of a system. If you just really need a video card because you start
gaming or something, you could get one for a A8N-VM CSM and still be as
well of as with a A8N-E.

If you use an Athlon 64 3000+, you may experience some strange results
running the "molecule" screen saver on Linux. Sometimes it rocks at 60
frames per second, and sometimes it slows down to 5 frames per second,
even if the computer is not doing anything (that point being tested by
the "top" command), even on less complex molecules. If may have
something to do with cache size, or poor memory allocation.

Adding a graphic card like a (fanless) 7600GS might help getting better
results while keeping the whole thing silent if you have a 12cm fan or
bigger.

The original post indicated that the user was going to install XP64, not
linux.

Some of the linux screen savers end up running the system at 100% CPU.
That's hardly what I would want when I walk away from my system. For
linux, I disable all screen savers except to just "turn off" the display.
