hi I keep seeing this everywhere now a days- what is the beta version of
whatever??? I have windows XP- Is this supposed to be another version OTHER
than xp (windows or other)- thanks
 
Are you referring to the beta version of Windows XP Service Pack 2?

A beta version of any software is a pre-release that has been put out for
open testing.. one should NEVER load beta software on a computer in constant
general use..
 
actually I am ignorant of what Beta means.........period. I see it in lots
of things-Is it a newer version of WIndows newer than mine- See, I remember
when VHS tapes came out & there was the beta version (which were smaller
than vhs) once. They quickly did away with beta-not popular enough.
I just want to know what Beta version means-
gee hope I am clear

Alpha software is not ready to be tested in the real world. Beta software is ready to be tested (and becomes RC (Release Canidate) when the hope the bugs have been found. Gold is the release software (based on colour of the CD masters)

Alpha is usually internally tested, Beta is publically tested and there will usually be between be 2 to 3 versions (beta 1, beta 2, and beta 3). RC is the same as beta and usually is 1 or 2 versions (RC1 and RC2).

From the Fourth Edition of the Microsoft Computer Dictionary:
beta [1] adj. Of or relating to software or hardware that is a beta.
beta [2] n. A new software or hardware product, or one that is being
updated, that is ready to be released to users for beta testing in
real-world situations. Usually .betas have most or all of the features and
functionality implemented that the finished product is to have.
beta test n. A test of software that is still under development,
acconplished by having people actually use the software. etc, etc,.
Selected beta testers have the responsibility of reporting any operational
or utilization errors (bugs) found.

Hi Rusty,

A beta version is software that has yet to be proven, i.e., there may be
problems that are yet to be resolved, it needs further testing. When you
install beta software, you are subject to all sorts of problems. Judging by
your asking this question, I would highly recommend that you don't install
anything that is still labeled "beta". No offence intended, but beta is for
the big "boys", I ain't one!!

First, you need to lookup "acronym" and find out what it
means. As a hint, none of those abbreviations in your
signature are acronyms. Next "beta" is not, strictly
speaking, "IT jargon." the word was in use to describe
preliminary testing well before the advent of electronic
computers.
 
I do not recall posting that the abbreviations behind my name as acronyms.
However, SCSI is an acronym and is considered "IT jargon". I too realize
that "Beta" is not strictly "IT jargon". However being in the computer
industry for a very long time now, the word "Beta" is used when testing
software or hardware -- which can and does far under "IT jargon" when used
in the IT industry.

Now that this took 3 minutes that I will never get back -- thank you!

working, but still under test; usu. used with `in': `in beta'. In
the Real World, systems (hardware or software) software often go
through two stages of release testing: Alpha (in-house) and Beta
(out-house?). Beta releases are generally made to a group of lucky
(or unlucky) trusted customers. 2. Anything that is new and
experimental. "His girlfriend is in beta" means that he is still
testing for compatibility and reserving judgment. 3. Flaky;
dubious; suspect (since beta software is notoriously buggy).

Historical note: More formally, to beta-test is to test a
pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software
by making it available to selected (or self-selected) customers and
users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product
cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout
the industry. `Alpha Test' was the unit, module, or component test
phase; `Beta Test' was initial system test. These themselves came
from earlier A- and B-tests for hardware. The A-test was a
feasibility and manufacturability evaluation done before any
commitment to design and development. The B-test was a
demonstration that the engineering model functioned as specified.
The C-test (corresponding to today's beta) was the B-test performed
on early samples of the production design, and the D test was the C
test repeated after the model had been in production a while.
