Am sure I am not alone but when I tried to update the Beta Progamme today,
after being told it was out of date, the programme downloaded OK but after
running the installation successfully (or so it seemed) the error message
returned telling me the programme had expired at 31st Dec.

I tried uninstalling old version and downloading new but with the same end
result. Are there problems with Microsoft server? I could understand it
more if the new programme hadn't downloaded OK.

Hello Smithy,

A) Happy New Year 2006.

B) One approach is to look at reputable third-party download sites for a
version with an appropriate date
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_AntiSpyware_d4466.html

C) Right click and "Save target as..."
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcDeterminationData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Copy/paste these files to Program files/Microsoft Antispyware

Restart MSAS and "check for updates"

D) Change back the date to 1/1/2005
and Go directly to the download site and get it directly:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

I hope this post is helpful, let us know which solution works ºut.

The site you suggest is the one I have tried several times to download from.
It is not a problem with actually downloading the update - just that it still
comes up to tell me my version is out of date afterwards.

Hi Engel

Many thanks indeed for your response. Sorry for the delay in trying out
your suggestions - have just been up to London and back to watch the New
Year's Day Parade. Twas overcast but fun.

Tried your link to download from elsewhere and blow and behold it worked
like a charm. Took a lot longer to come down but after going through the
normal installation wizard Beta came up without the 31st Block error message
and when I went in to update the update it duly did so and I now have the
new version up and running until July.

FANTASTIC. Many thanks for a better start to my New Year.

p.s.

Haven't yet rebooted the system but I presume it will come up OK again. If
not, I could return to haunt the newsgroup....!! :-)

The site he suggested is the ONLY legitimate source.
Any source outside of Microsoft is not authorized and potentially dangerous.

On the link that Engel gave, the top choice is a Microsoft server so it is
the same as Jim gave you.
The others do not redirect to Microsoft and thus are unauthorized sources
since Microsoft does not authorize 3rd party distribution.

After the download, you install.

Do you mean the Windows Authentication?

There's a bug in the installation process. Many users report downloading
what should (according to them and according to Microsoft) be the right
bits, and having the install result in the same expired message.

There are two fixes that both seem to work.
(Smithy used a third fix, which was to download from a third-party
site--why this works is unclear.)

Fix 1) go to \program files\microsoft antispyware\gcasSWUpdater.exe and
double click that file (represented by a satellite dish icon)--this brings
up an auto-download prompt for the new version, and that auto-download and
install seems invariably to work.

Fix 2) (Courtesy of Jupiter Jones)--delete the \program files\microsoft
antispyware folder and all subfolders, and then run the downloaded file
again.

The appearance, in all of these cases, is that the download contains the
wrong (old) code. However, I don't believe this to be the case at this
point--there's something screwier going on.

It may be that some users have more than one copy of the
program installed and their update isn't being installed to
the "active" program. That is why deleting ALL the folders
(fix 2) works.

Good thought--#2 has been used for a good while for some other issues, and
seems to be both easy to explain and reasonably safe.
