Beta 2007 Question...Desktop Search???

G

Guest

Why does the new beta have to have the desktop search? I'm a stickler for
processes running on my computer and the desktop search just destroys the
speed of the computer.

While running i've seen it need over 38 K and it starts up several other sub
routines that all use over 7-8 K as well. My whole system doesn't use this
much combined.

Can I make Outlook stop asking me to download it everytime I start Outlook?
It works fine without it. I had to remove it because it was just killing my
system. Thanks!

1) "Why?"
-For speedy search results an indexed system works best.

2) "Desktop search just destroys the speed of the computer"
-What would your hardware configuration be then?
-Note that WDS only indexes during idle time so it leaves your system alone
when you are working with it or playing a game

3) "38 K"
That is nothing. You probably mean MB? I seriously doubt your entire
computer runs on less than 38MB of memory. Also note that you can't measure
memory usage this way. An application can "hog" memory as much as there is
available even when it doesn't need it. This will in fact speed up your
computer. Memory management will make sure that memory is returned when
another application requests it and WDS doesn't really need it. I've
explained memory management several times and very recently in this
newsgroup so you might want to do a search on that if you want to know more.

4) Tools-> Options-> Search Options allows you to disable indexing and when
not installed I believe it will allow you disable the prompts

Why? Because I don't need to search for anything, I keep everything very well
organized and I know where everything is located.

It does not only work duing idle time. This program is a killer of the
resources on my computer. I have a p4 prescot 2.8 Ghz., 1GB of memory. I
shouldn't be slowed down by much. I have only 31 processes running on the pc.
It is very efficient.

Of course I meant 38 MB's. I re-installed it to run some tests and at times
it takes over 75 MB's of memory from my system, and lots of processor. Then
of course I un-installed it again.

You cannot shut this off the way you described. If you don't have it
installed none of the boxes are able to be checked. Is there a patch or
update that is coming to make this just an add-in?

Please get rid of this as a "must" program microsoft. It should be an extra
add-in for those people who need it. I'm sure it's great but very bulky,
almost as bad as aol.

Thanks,

Hi Carey,

Registry Key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Search

DWORD: DisableSearchDownloadPrompt
Values: 1 = The WDS installation prompt is displayed
0 (or missing DWORD) The WDS installation prompt is not displayed

It won't just be an add-in, and no there is no patch or update coming.
This is beta software. Beta software doesn't have to be nice to your CPU
(Microsoft is working of course on making sure that the release version
is) or your memory. It doesn't have to have stellar performance either.

Btw, you should be able to switch it off with the button in the Options
dialog. However, this only works if you don't have WDS (3 or 2.6.5)
installed at all.

I don't have a search folder available at that location....

I understand it's a beta version, aren't use "testers" suppose to leave
feedback to help improve the product???

Absolutely. I was just pointing out that you shouldn't expect the same
support from MS via patches etc and the same performance than in a
release version.
FYI, the first thing I complained about when I opened B2 was that I
couldn't turn of that message easily.
