A little help please, Bill. It won't install on my w2k:
This software requires GDI+. Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software
PreRequisite Pack.

What in the world is that? My system is fully up to date.

I hope this Beta can give you a break, so you can spend more time with your

Good question. I was planning a 2k install tomorrow--maybe I can get to it
sooner. I've some thoughts about what this might be--let me do some
research.

Hmm - you're my guinea pig--I won't have a 2k workstation to test with 'til

is what I think you need.

That did it after I copied it to WINNT/system32.

It seems I had a slightly older version on my system:
F:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
5.1.3102.1355

This is the one I just downloaded:
5.1.3102.1360

Now to see if I can get rid of .NET and the 300MB+ SDK<G>

Thanks, Bill.

Well--I'm following in your footsteps.

After unzipping in system32, I read redist.exe which says not to do that,
but to put it in the private directory of whatever's gonna use it--which'd
probably be \program files\windows defender.

I'll leave it where it is and see if anything breaks.

Turns out it has to be in system32.

It runs as a service now.

Hi Bob

I believe one important key to this is missing, inside Vistan you
have a new "Security center" with also Windows Defender checks.
Is it running and is definitions updated ? Similar to antivirus and
firewall checks.

Are you sure?

I found it running as a process as MSASCui.exe 5.252K but still nothing in
the system tray. Is that a "feature"?

Today's gonna be a strain. Got a full day of work to do, lunch with my
wife, listen to Gates' keynote speech, and maybe answer one or two messages
here.....

I believe those are all by design.

FWIW. This is the place to express your opinion about the design. When
doing so, it may help to mention which OS version you are running on.

Whoops - Agreed--I was speaking about the icon and the progress indication.
There should be a balloon when def update is started, and another when it is
complete.

--

That's why I want to hear Windows versions. On Vista, the Security center
does useful work in checking on Windows Defender's presence. I'm not clear
on the plan for the downlevel OS's.

Yes, that is a feature. When there is a problem (spyware detected) or
something requiring your approval (change to startup programs) it shows up in
the system tray to alert you. Otherwise, if all is hunky dory, it goes away
and leaves you alone.
