Beta 2 as an upgrade

Received my beta 2 (5384 build) disks yesterday. Tried 3 times to install as
an upgrade over an existing copy of XP so that I didn't lose any of my work.
On all occasions the installation seemed to work okay but on the last reboot,
all I got was a blank screen with just 'Beta 2 Customer Preview Program -
Build 5384' in the bottom right-hand corner, and everything else dead. The
icon moved but no mouse actions possible. The keyboard lights were on as well.

I tried with basic graphic drivers in case that was the problem, but no.

I read that the Beta program does not do 'upgrades'. Is this so?

The latest Betas should upgrade but as with any upgrade there are those
computers that have issues.
Have you made sure your computer is ready for Vista?
Uninstall anything Vista has problems, disabling may not be enough.
Disconnect all peripherals, printer, camera, scanner etc.

If all else fails perform a Clean Installation and use your data back-ups
for your important data and settings.

Fully compliant, except for the webcam and belkin wifi card. I'll try again
today I suppose and see how we go.

I have had issues with IE7 with my set-up and found that IE7 would only
install in safe mode. Would this be worth a try?

JJ's advice is excellent, but be aware that you may not get an upgrade per
se regardless of what you do. I have four Vistas operating very successfully
on three computers including one VM. The problem was, none of the XP upgrades
worked regardless of what I did, and if you load a driver (allowed to do so
by Vista) and it becomes a problem, you will go crazy trying to uninstall it.
Bottomline, had to clean install every attempted upgrade (2) with a clean
install.

Colin Barnhorst says all are 'clean' installs, but some seem to keep data
and non system files better than others. Good luck.

Remove any usb devices except for a keyboard or mouse. Uninstall any
software that uses a scanner, such as antivirus and antispam, etc. This is
still beta and the Upgrade Advisor and Compatibility checker are not 100%
accurate yet.

Logical. I will give it a go....

Didn't work unfortunately. What I did discover by attempting a Vista recovery
was a message that the 'partition table does not have a valid system
partition'. Any odeas what they means?

In the meantime, I will continue to search.

OMG u just got 5384 yesterday??? Microsoft is that far behind.. we are up to
5492 or 5505. RC1 is due 8/15-18 hopefully. I would d/l a more recent build
after that somehow!

well I was going by all the different forums on the net. I am in no rush I
want it to be a great product...Take your time. I'm not going anywhere :)

What is out there is talk of an RC1 preview build of some sort. That is
what I am expecting TechBeta to get any day now. That almost certainly
would preclude an official RC1 build to CPP and a broader audience (new
programs) for about a month.

I just want a version that installs!

Hi Gazza

I upgraded XP Pro to vista after running a compatibility test, the test
showed problems with printer & Scanner drivers, i unistalled my printer and
scanner i also took off software that wasnt really needed, after the upgrade
all worked fine except IE7, this was over come by right click on IE7
properties advanced then hit reset explorer settings, since then vista as
worked without any problems,
