I swapped in a Antec SmartPower 400W power supply for that PC.
Is Bestec a good brand actually? Better than Antec?
Bestec can be OK, but I wouldn't make any special effort to buy that
brand, and if you ever need an odd size available only from the
computer manufacturer, see if they offer other brands, like Delta/
Newton, Lite-On, NMB, or Fortron-Source Power. I know that Dell has
let customers choose between Delta and Hi-Pro (Sirtec?) replacement
PSUs.
SmartPower I and II PSUs are considered good designs that are prone to
failing in 2-3 years because of their lousy capacitors, brands such as
Fuhjyyu (search "Fuhjyyu syndrome"), Koshin (one popped a few months
ago in the +5V standby regulator of my 350W SmartPower II, and
apparently Antec has long known of this problem, including for the
500W version), and maybe CapXon (I'm not sure about CapXon). But
replace all the higher capacitance low voltage caps (anything rated
for at least 470-1000uF, probably a total of 8-10 of them) with
quality ones, and a SmartPower should run fine until its fan konks
out. Unfortunately it's crowded inside the PSU, and some of the caps
are unusually small in diameter for their voltage and capacitance and
not available in the same size from quality manufacturers (Samxon may
be an exception). So the new caps may have to be mounted 20-30mm
above the circuit board (bare wire leads must be insulated with
plastic tubing, caps secured with silicone rubber glue or nylon wire
ties). It looks ugly but wasn't that hard when I tried it with a 350W
SmartPower II.
