Best Word Processing Freeware

I was wondering if you had a recommendation for the best word processing
freeware. I have discovered AbiWord...and find that it is adequate, at
best. I realize that I could buy Word for Windows but I am on a very
limited budget. Thanks, in advance.

OpenOffice's web processing module is efficient too.

Well not freeware MS Works Suite comes with Word 2002 for under $100US

I do everything in a plain text editor (PFE).
 
OpenOffice has excellent business quality word processor and spreadsheet
applications. I'd say they are as good as Word and Excel. The presentation
software is OK, but it is not up to the standards set by PowerPoint. But it
would be fine for light duty use.

No serious database application

QJOT,the best freeware word processor IMHO. Small,fast and can import images.

But then of course, Robin was asking for a *word processor*, not a
database application.
 
Then why mention it here in this group? Others have mentioned freeware
solutions.

Because the OP mentioned buying Word but it was too expensive. MS Office is
very expensive but you can get MS Word 2002 as part of MS Works Suite for
considerably less.

Well, to be accurate, he didn't say HOW he wished to process words! I type
words into spreadsheets and databases all the time! And I bet,you do too,
sometimes.

Seriously though, maybe I'm picking nits, but when people start recommending
Open Office or any office suite software without qualification, I get
concerned that other people will get the idea that all applications in the
suite are of equal value. and that is never true unless the value is zero.

'Fraid not. I haven't any real need for a dbase program and as for
spreadsheets, I create them in the commercial word processsing program
I favor.
