I have a friend who bought a Dell over a year ago. It had whichever version
of McAfee anti-virus came with Dell at the time. I have McAfee VirusScan
10 and am going to stop by in a couple of days to install it on his system.
What is the best way to do this? Uninstall the McAfee anti-virus on his
system and do a fresh install VirusScan 10? Or keep the current McAfee on
there and install VirusScan 10 as an upgrade? TIA

Remove the old version via the "add/remove programs" Control Panel applet then reboot the
PC.
Then install McAfee VirusScan v10.

(1) Remove the McAfee software thru Add/Remove Programs
(2) Install Norton Internet Security 2006

lol, One step forward, Two steps backwards. *You* may wish to
re-evaluate the software you use to protect you from online threats.
You may find that there are better solutions available :)

P.S. to OP: Uninstall McAfee Antivirus and Install the latest version.
This is the best way to upgrade. It's known as a clean install.

Uninst the old first.
There are some interesting bugs which are the result of
installing certain versions over certain other versions.
