I want to upgrade my 'C' drive. The 'C' drive is 60Gb and I purchased a new
200Gb drive. My goal is to put the 60Gb drive on the shelf when I am all
done.

How do I format the 200Gb drive as a "system" drive and move the operating
system as well as everything else to it?

I was able to format it, but it is currently empty. How do I move it all so
I can just unplug the 60Gb and put the 200Gb in its place, and not notice
any difference?

Thanks....

Retail hard disks come with instructions on how to do exactly what you want, and they also include a CD with all the software you need.

Does Seagate have this sort of software. I could'nt find at www.seagate.com.

I would make an 'image' of the drive. norton ghost does it as does
acronis trueimage. Those are usually used. but there may be other
software that is free.
apparently maybe a prog called Clone Maxx or Drive Image XML - I think
they either of them is free
It'll clone/image the whole drive, not just the C partition. So you can
change drives and not notice any difference.

It's possible that some HDDs come with SW to do this. But there are
standard progs, liek those mentioned.

You will have to do a bit of work yourself, by formatting the new drive,
then copying 3 files onto it to make it bootable.

Boot.ini
Ntdetect.com
Ntldr

Then using xxcopy to copy all the files from your old drive to the new one.

Have fun

Use the software from the manufacturer which they include with every retail
version of the disk.
If all you do is un[lug the 60 GB disk and put the 200 GB disk, you will
certainly see a difference.
That difference is that the computer will not boot.

Paul Most, and maybe all, the major disk manufacturers supply free software and instructions to do exactly what you desire to do. I know that Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital do so.

This is a topic near and dear to my heart, right now... and I'm about to go
nuts over it!

I have tried several different methods of copying/cloning my 80 gb drive
onto my new 200 gb drive. This includes DriveImage 7, DriveimageXML, Seagate
Drive Wizard, and a couple of other approaches.

All the files copy over just fine, but when I try to boot the drive, it
hangs. I have tried doing a repair install, but that fails when the
installer cannot find a file called "asms" on the reboot.

It is beginning to look like I will have to go through a complete
reinstallation, then reactivation, and then likely reinstallation of ALL the
other software... including some annoying reactivations there.

Anybody have any ideas on how to make this upgrade work?

Thanks,
DaveK
