Hi -

I have recently created a whole load of contacts items in Outlook after
writing a macro to import a list from Excel. I currently have the contacts
in a public folder. However, a number people here want to be able to use
these contacts as an Address List. Would it be worth somehow converting the
contacts into a global address list. Or is there a global way I can turn
the public folder into an address list?

I have noticed the "Outlook Address Book" tab on the folder properties which
has a checkbox: "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book"; however,
whilst I see the folder appear under "Outlook Address Book", I don't see any
addresses at all. Also, I get the feeling that this isn't a global setting.

To make it even more confusing, some people have Outlook 97 - I don't know
if that would have a bearing on the situation.

You're on the right track: You can use a public folder as an address list.
Each person just checks the Outlook Address Book box on the Properties dialg
for the folder. If you're not seeing names in that list, that's probably
because the email addresses were never resolved with your macro. Open an
item and you'll see what I mean: If the address isn't underlined, it's not
resolved and so can't appear in the address book.

Sue -

Thanks - it didn't occur to me that there even had to be email addresses for
them to show up. I was only trying to do this so that a mail merge was as
simple as possible. That was until I found out how to do it from Outlook
directly.

There's only one thing you didn't cover: is it possible to do this contacts
folder -> address book mapping globally, or by user group?

It's specific to each user and can be scripted in a login or other script,
but not handled in group policy.
