hello,
I've got 2 machines with SATA disk controllers that are a bit old and
don't have the original install disks for the drivers. One of the
vendors no longer has the drivers available on their website!

I want to get a new disk controller, but what is a 'nice' way to install
the new disk controller so I can keep the original winXP installation?

I know about the F6 option during install. Can this add a disk
controller driver to a current installation or is it only for new installs?

Thanks,

Dave

It is unlikely the mirror will work with a different controller. You will
have to backup or preferably image the mirror then restore the image after
the drives have been moved to the new controller. The process would go like
this.

1) Install the new controller. Windows will find the new hardware and
install the drivers so they are available later when you move the drives to
the new controller.

2) Image the mirror with a drive imaging program. You may have to break the
mirror to do this. It will depend on the drive imaging program.

3) Create a new mirror with the new controller's firmware.

4) Move the drives to the new controller and set the BIOS so it will boot
from the new controller.

5) Restore the image you created earlier.

Depending on the drive imaging software and your controller items 3 & 4 may
be reversed in order.
