I don't want Norton. What's the best software? Interested in opinions.
I have Windows98, home user and not a whole lot of space available.
I tried out Panda Titanium, but couldn't modify scanning areas - it was all
or nothing.

Kaspersky is the standard answer here and for a good reason

Good detection, small footprint, low cost;
Either F-Prot for DOS

or Antidote

Now, if you don't mind paying and still want minimal load,
KAV v3.5 is my suggestion, regardless of price (about $50)

I'm beta testing F-Secure Internet Security 2004 and it has picked up three
trojans that NOD32 didn't pick up...AVG Free edition didn't pick up much at
all and I got beat up with viruses (kids use the machine :)

Hope you don't mind me tagging onto yours. It sounds like the original
poster is a home user with low resources. Something like VET (CA) is pretty
good. VET has picked up a lot of the things that Norton miss. Mcafee isn't
too bad.

I'm was just a little bit sceptical at first about it running on a Java
applet but then again, in biological terms we're now using Botox for skin
care and drycleaning fluid to decaf coffee, so I guess it's a misconception
on my part.

I used to love Thunderbyte and Norman Defense systems but I think they've
both gotten swallowed.

Good luck,

Ka.

Try Panda Platinum, includes firewall.
