Hello, I was wondering the best network setup for our small office. We currently have a file server and web server using Windows Server 2000, but the techs that installed it really did a horrible job. I am just trying to educate myself so that when we get the new techs to install our new network, I'm not in the dark
Requirements are as follows
- Host our own emai
- Host our own website
- Access our network from home via VP
- Internal and external email should be handled via the same Exchange serve
- We use eTrust Antivirus by Computer Associates which has a "gateway" server option that scans all incoming and outgoing packets. This software must be installed on a "gateway" computer
- Our websites use SQL server. We are thinking of moving Exchange from our file server to our web server, so that internet traffic doesn't need to hit our file server at all
- The Gateway server might need to be configured so that it forwards the appropriate ports to our web server (110, 21, 80, 25, 1433). Our web server will be part of our internal network, but on it's own block
- all our computers, including our workstations, file server, and web server will be hooked up to our hub, which in turn, is hooked up to our gateway server (2 nics), which is connected to the internet via our ADSL modem

Does this sound stupid, ok, or good to you?
thanks for your help and support. If you wish, please email your response to me as well

I'm not sure what you want us to tell you, this setup you
outlined sounds good. It is important to keep your
gateway up to date with windows update. I would also use
a switch rather then a hub for speed and to lower the
number of collisions on the network. I would also look
into a hardware router for the gateway.

hope this helps,
jake

Ok, i guess I just needed some re-assurance as to what the techs are telling me.
What did you mean by "a hardware router for the gateway."
The gateway has two NICS in it for through-traffic. Wouldn't that be my hardware firewall, in effect? Or did you mean having a linksys router between the modem and the gateway
thanks for your help.
