I am looking for a solution to scanning newspaper articles. The problem
with very large format scanners is that their price tag can run in the
4 figures, and I don't want to spend more than $1500. This means that
if I have an article running from the top to the bottom of a tabloid I
have to scan it several times. Are there software tools able to stitch
together these partial scans with subpixel resolution running on Mac OS
X? I'm looking for something similar to panoramas from multiple
pictures, but geared towards printed material.
Thanks!

Look under www.UMAX.com, they often have their tabloid PowerLook
scanner as a refurb, often for $1200 or so. This is a safe way of
buying a tabloid scanner. I have tried to buy 3 off of ebay, all were
damaged in shipping (destroyed is more the word), one got run through
by a fork lift. insurance paid for it, so it was good I insisted on
having them insured. Getting UPS to pay up o0n there insurance is not
for the faint of heart. Buy it from the manufacturer and the scanner
will be packed properly.

Canon LIDE scanners come with PhotoStitch which does a great job of
stitching images scanned in sections..... but I have no idea whether it
works on a MAC. Check their website.
