I wish to set my cameras resolution to achieve good quality prints (no
emailing of photos) What pixel/compression settings should I use?

How big are the prints expected to be?
Why don't you just use the maximum that your camera supports?

They will be standard size prints. I wish to acheive a balance between the
number of pictures the cf card will store while maintaining acceptable print
quality

Regardless of the file size of your
best quality / lowest compression...
that's what you paid for when you
bought the camera. If you have a
file storage problem, buy a larger
CF card.

Use all the best settings for the
best quality prints. You never know
when you may wish to print a larger
size image or do some cropping.

BTW, what brand / model is your
camera?

I have a canon 3.2 megapixel IXUS V3 plus 1 x 16 mb and 1 x 32 mb cf card
The reason I am asking is because my husband is taking the camera on hols
and I am not sure how many images he will be able to store on those 2 cards,
but I realise that the resolution setting will make a difference. I guess he
may take up to 40 or 50 shots. ps.....I am a digital camera newbie in case
you couldnt tell!

I presume that you mean 4x6. There really is no such thing as standard size
prints.

You can determine what you need by using 200 dpi. Hence the image should be
at least 800x1200 pixels. Your 3.2mb camera can easily make such an image.

As for storage requirements, the less compression the better. Doesn't your
camera provide a range of quality settings (this term really means
compression)? If so, use the middle one. You must determine for yourself
what size files your camera makes at this compression level and number of
pixels. Hence you should make a test run to deterimine the number of images
your camera can put on your cards.

yes they would be 4 x 6, as you used to get with when you got negatives
developed...I didnt know the measurements!
My camera has 4 different options for pixel settings and 3 for compression
I will start by using the settings you suggest, and my manual has a chart
advising various storage capacities of the cards depending on the settings
and function.
Thanks for your help.

Invest in a 128 or 256mb card right off the bat.

Make your life much easier.
