Hi
I have installed two AD servers, I guess one is a PDC and the other as the
backup, now the PDC is down and need to be reinstalled. What are the proper
steps required to bring the PDC back into the picture?

I have tried to reinstall the PDC and configure it as with my initial
installation, but it doesn't seem to work

any help, please?!

TIA

If you have not done any modifications, the defunct machine was also
Infrastructure Master and RID Pool Master.

Also, it this is a forest root domain, then the Schema Master and
Domain Naming Master roles are on this machine.

I think you have to seize the roles on the remaining DC and then
re-install the first from scratch as additional DC.

In order to better understand the FSMO roles:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197132/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801/en-us

In order to seize the FSMO roles:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504/en-us

Regards,

If a DC died and you did not have a backup, then you must first seize all
the roles it held and clear up the dead DCs links from the remaining DC. if
you have never done anything like this before then I suggest you do a bit of
reading up on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q216498/

Once you have cleared up the mess, then re-install the DC and add it as an
additional. You can then transfer the relevant roles back to it.

First seize all roles to the second.

Secondly install a *new* DC.

Thirdly, clean out the information about the failed DC.

Unless someone corrects me, I don't see a need to try to
recreate the first DC. If you have any applications on the
failed DC, you will need to reinstall them elsewhere, of course.

Fourthly, move whatever roles you feel necessary to the new DC.

Cheers,

Cliff
