Update on PC Health Control Center
Just came across this from a repair job. Couldn't get past the Control center splash screen, couldn't boot into safe mode.
Removed the HDD and hooked it up to a clean machine as an external HDD and spent several hours scanning it with Avast and MBAM. This thing has gotten itself all over the place, including iTunes, Yahoo Browser, all over windows\system32, MS Office, Adob, AVG and a whole bunch of root kit infections. Even scanning as an external HDD it wouldn't allow Avast to delete infected files, only by using MBAM File Assassin. I finally got several completely clean scans, so popped the HDD back into the host PC, fully expecting Windows not to boot, but it did, and .. still getting the splash screen!
I guess it's got itself embedded in the registry. Can't see much els eto do short of a clean install. I guess I could mess about trying to edit the registry as an externally connected drive, but not sure it's worth the hassle.
PC is running XP with AVG, reasonably up to date. Seems to be a fairly innocuous browsing session when it happened (yesterday, 11/14/09)
I'm guessing this is a fairly new version to be this tenacious. Doesn't seem to be that much on Google.
Anyone else have any experience on this one?
