Best New Freeware Program of 2004?

I think PhotoFiltre took it by acclimation last year. There were nothing but
accolades and positive hoopla surrounding it. Every new release was an event
here on ACF.

The picture is a little more blurry this year. I think Firefox would have to
get a mention (or did it come out in 2003?) Digital camera buffs could
certainly make a case for FastStone Image Viewer, which went from zero to
excellent within 2 or 3 months.

I guess I would have to reluctantly choose Free Download Manager. It
certainly made a stir when it came out, and rapidly improved to commercial
quality and features.

I know I must be forgetting something!

I think it would have to be Firefox 1.0. More than 12 million downloads
since it was released a little more than a month ago!

Since it's simply a new version of a browser that has existed since
2002, I hardly see how it can qualify as "best /new/ freeware program
of 2004." Unless of course you define "new" to include "new versions."

As it was Beta until it went final this year, I would say that it is "new".
While the code base has been around, the actual browser known as Firefox
was not an official release recommended for everyone. It now is.

seems the whole acf consists more and more only of votings. One voting
follows the others :-(

Allow me to fill it in for you. ;-)

As ever, the concept of *best* remains highly subjective. For instance,
many of us could care -less- about what you have listed.

C'est La Vie!

Phone-home-ware. Users will have to decide for themselves whether that
makes them nervous or not.
it only phoned home when it wanted to update itself. but no matter, it
got in my way too damn much to be of any worth...

Thanks for suggestion:)!
We released today Beta 2 version, fixing all of the bugs (and adding
some most-wanted features). Once we get confirmation from users all has
been really fixed,- EssentialPIM will become final 1.0.

Only too happy to promote such a fine piece of software. Thank you for
making it freeware. Beta 2 installs over the top of previous versions and is
running fine on my machine. The error when inserting an event a year in
advance is now fixed, and all email addresses and hyperlinks are now
clickable.
Thanks!
