I have a 5 button MS optical with teflon tape on the feet and I need a new
mousepad. I've been looking at the Ratpadz GS, X-Trac Zoom, the func
surface 1030, and a few others. Can anyone recommend one?

I have a funcpad. It took a little getting used to, because there is much
less resistance than most standard mouepads. However, its speed and accuracy
are great for gaming. The base is rock solid, and the thingy that keeps the
cord out of the way is cheap but effective.

Plastic laminate (brands like Formica and Wilsonart) is what I use; it is thin, cheap, can be cut to any
size, and is one of the slickest things you will ever slide teflon across.

Thanks for the intriguing suggestion. Do you mean like kitchen/bathroom
floor tiles?

I've found the best mousepad for an optical mouse to be any that's a
medium to dark color, non reflective, and with a smooth fabric-like
finish. Rubber padding or other heavy material that helps keep the pad
from sliding around is a plus.

I've found the best mousepad is none at all. If you have a laminate desk
just use the surface, works great for games.

I got me a FlexiGlow Fx gamepad :)

It lights up :0 and has an exellent black hard surface that your mouse
glides over, very nice for 25 bucks Australia convert to find your
price !

Works fantastic with my Mx700 Optical mouse.

Its green at the momment :)

I use 1600 Grit silicon carbide sandpaper with ruffled potatoe chip
crumbs as my mouse pad. Its great for a wrist work out and a great
snack if I get hungry, think about it.

With an optical mouse that fits the hand comfortably the wooden
tabletop works just as well as a hairy thigh. Actually, I'm surprised
ball mice are still around in the stores.

I have a preference for optical mice too, but ball mice do have their
place. Some gamers prefer them, and I can see why, first, ball mice
don't react when you lift them, so you can more quickly lift and glide
without your character spazzing out. Most opticals will react to
being lifted and moved, unless you lift them in a wide arc (ie. high
off the pad before setting it back down). Some gamers don't like
having to do that.

That said, I really do think ball mice are an endangered species. The
only ones I've seen recently were "surplus" being sold at considerable
markdown, or from oddball manufacturers, and many stores don't even
stock them anymore.
