Hi - I need a new laser printer. My budget is $400. My requirements
are relativly simple. This printer will be used under Linux and
FreeBSD, so postscript is a must. For that same reason, I need a
printer that is driven off the parellel port. (Or Ethernet, but I
doubt that's gonna happen in this price range.) If it's a question of
quality and speed, I'd definatly would give up a few PPM for better
print quality. I've always used HP kit, so I'm currently leaning
towards the 1300, but I've seen a few less than stellar reviews of it.

Dittos especially on the Laserjet 4 series. You won't find a better all
around "beat the hell out of it" laser printer if you don't mind the rather
slow 4 ppm print time.

Actually, the 4 and 4M are eight pages per minute; the 4L may be 4 PPM.
The 4+ and 5+ models went to (I think) twelve pages per minute.
They are dirt cheap to refurb, lots of info exists on
the net about them, work fabulous with XP and just about every other OS
known to man, and will probably last much longer than any new cheap laser
you'll find. If you can't find one for $50 or less in excellent shape and
working with a good cart, then you really didn't look too hard.

Agreed. Although I have occasionally found sub-$400 deals on
4000-series printers, which I like better because of their instant-on
fuser and quick printing.
