best image organizer?

Looking for a program to organize images, often document images. Needs to
have a pane of small thumbnails, and a resizable "large image" pane to
display the clicked thumbnail image in larger format (e.g. so that scanned
document text will be readable). Needs to have a folder tree, and needs to
allow for copy/move by drag and drop, and should have copy/move by keyboard
command as well.

Tried the following:

Irfanview - Thumbnail window comes closest to what I'm looking for. No move
by drag and drop; only copy. No pane to display selected image in larger
format. Can double-click and display in Irfanview window, but have to set
"fit to window" options, etc.

Xnview - Good options for "large display pane". No move by drag and drop;
only copy. Move by Alt+M key brings up box, but box doesn't allow for long
pathnames.

Slowview - No move or copy by drag and drop. Move by Shift+M brings up box,
but again box for pathname is too short and isn't resizable.

Image Browser Arctic - couldn't figure this one out at all.

Image Guider - only small thumbnails; need bigger image display.

P3dO Explorer - seems to meet the above requirements, but it freaks out on
some images, displays wrong colors or black.

2xExplorer - no "fit to window" options on thumbnail pane.

Fineview - no support for TIF files. (0.63, haven't checked for later
version). Can't resize the large display big enough.

Uniview - File/Open window has a fairly large preview, but it isn't
resizable.

In short, P3d0 seems closest, but is buggy in display of images. XnView and
Slowview are next closest, but have deficiencies in copy/move capabilities.

There are many photo processing programs (I assume they'll handle documents
too). Personally I've used the Image Resizer and that's it but noticed he
has a plethora of other programs on site; they are donationware, but you
need not donate (no nagware).

Anyway, check it out (looks like you've done some good research already) you
might find just what you want.

Enjoy.

Xnview is the best it has move .. you just have to hold shift down..

well, it depends of the users behavior. I'm using ThumbsPlus (not
freeware) but IrfanView (free) is similar.

1. top posting :-(
2. about 60 unnecessarily quoting snipped :-(

Welcom to this NG, but please:

If you use 2K or XP, try the Windows Explorer. You can set the icons to any
reasonable size, and flip through them fast. Thumbnail view shows what's
inside the folders.

Irfanview works in the same way and it's better than Xnview.

No way ... XnView has dir structure on the side has more options how the
panel is setup

Well we're off topic I guess now, but how did you manage to resize the
thumbnails in Windows Explorer? I looked around to find out how to do this,
but couldn't manage it.

I did find the Filmstrip view in Explorer, which is useful.

I think you might like FotoAlbum. IMO it is a superb organizer. You can
view folder and subfolder images at the same time or separately (or
organize into groups for viewing *without* changing the folder
structure).

The single photo view can be set as you like for viewing size.

I'm not sure off the top of my head about all the file moving
capabilities - but I moved files around a lot when I first tried it (it
has a fairly good help file which I read - later) - most things worked .
. .

Susan

Drag and drop works just fine.

You can also get an app called Folder Jazz, which puts "New Folder..." in
all folder's context menus of windows explorer. Since FotoAlbum uses
windows explorer for its directory tree, you get to add new folders here
too.

Be aware of FotoAlbum's neat capability to go into either one of two modes:
explore mode, or view all mode. In view all mode, you see all photos in
not just the parent folder, but all subfolders to the parent folder as
well. To set the parent folder, use: FILE | SET PICTURE FOLDER, and to
browse parent folders you've chosen in the past use: FILE | REOPEN | (names
of your folders here)

Another one is Cornice available at

http://web.tiscali.it/agriggio/cornice.html

Its multiplatform and source is available.
One particularly neat feature of cornice is that you can
view the images in a zip file.

I have not done as extensive comparison as you but
I have used a variety of packages and currently I usually
use jpegger or cornice for viewing and organizing images.

For cropping images, I usually use xnview for its ability
to have multiple images in separate windows at once so
I can crop out part of an image and paste it into another
xnview window.

For adding text to images or erasing part of an image
I usually use MS-Paint (which is included with MS-Windows).

FotoAlbum looks promising - but guess what? It has a limit of 10,000
images, which I exceeded. So I had to select another subfolder as my
FotoAlbum picture folder.

Hold down the shift button while you drag a file to another folder.
Otherwise, dragging and dropping in the browser copies a file. Works
for me.

Same as IrfanView.

I tried most of these other ones too. For one reason or another, I
rejected all of them and kept both IrfanView and XnView.

Also, another one is imgv. Like cornice it is cross platform and the source
is available. The key feature that it has that I have not seen elsewhere is
its 4-at-a-time slide shows.

Ahhh JC ... a lesson learned. Check out the help file and keyboard
shortcuts! I tried the usual right-click and drag option, expected that to
give me the copy/move option, but no go. Thanks much for the tip.

Irfanview has no preview panel ...

Which is a strange omission, because in every other way, Irfanview is the
feature-rich freeware Gold Standard IMO.
