Is Gimp the best (for Windows platform), or are there other
alternatives? MS Paint is quite good also :).

IMHO, Gimp is the best image editor for Windows.

It has a large users base, and will soon have greater Photoshop
compatibility (I read in the GIMP newsgroup that support for Photoshop
bruhes will be added to GIMP 2.3).

(to some groups: Yes, I use Windows and MS Office. So what?)

There is the Adobe photo DeLuxe. It's probably not free, but it's not sold
any more, so the offence can't be very big to look up an old copy.

It's not a paint program, but a specially arranged photo editor with both a
standard menu plus step-by-step buttons. Also the mask functions works very
well with a smart-mask tool among others.

Arrangeing basic things like light, contrast, hue, saturations and retuching
by color cloneing etc. are very well adapted for photo editing.

Yeah, but IrfanView only handles simple operations. Still, it's awesome.

OK, I must be in a more cantankerous mood than usual this morning,
but... I think I will snap if I see that word 'awesome' another dozen
or three times again today, as I seem to do almost every day when
reading newsgroup posts ;-(

What would you use on seeing say the Grand Canyon? Or an erupting
volcano? Or witnessing the successful conclusion of the 10-year
Huygens/Gemini project?

Using it about a piece of software debases the language currency IMO.
Irfanview is neat, cool, versatile, flexible, well-designed, very
useful, excellent value, etc, etc. But it's not 'awesome'!
