I currently use FTP Explorer which is ok, but a bit old. I was wondering
which FTP client (free naturally) is considered the 'best' these days.

Thanks.

Most advanced seems to be SmartFTP, supports CHMOD which is a pretty hard to
find feature

Filezilla rocks.

Actually, if this is the only reason you are looking for an ftp
client, the command line ftp program that comes with Windows 2000 (and
I presume other versions of windows) allows you to do this by issuing
an ftp subcommand such as:

quote site chmod 755 myfile.txt

Well, guess I'm different I use WS_FTP, the free version for personal users.
There is a pay version which I d/l and started using before I realized the
difference. It's a bit difficult to switch directories, though. Who knows,
maybe I'll upgrade one of these days. ;)

I do, too; I began using the 16-bit version in win31 years ago and
haven't seen any need to change since moving "up" to 32-bit.

If you want to go a different route, check out NcFTP. It's a command line
only FTP client, but it has many more features than either FileZilla or
SmartFTP.

seconded... great client if u are not afraid of a non-GUI client. It does
not support keeping alive the connection though (which FileZilla does)

I used LeechFTP.

LeechFTP URL - http://tinyurl.com/43cf . Works like a charm on my Win98se
box, is fast and lightweight, *definitely* supports CHMOD and some remote
file editing. SmartFTP was bloated and sluggish on my archaic system and I
didn't care for the ws_ftp user interface.

Before I settled on LeechFTP, I tried two others...SmartFTP
and...uh...<brain fart>...damn, what was that other one?

It'll come to me in the shower, tomorrow. :)

Don't forget that SmartFTP is now nagware.
