Thingamablog
http://thingamablog.sourceforge.net/

A Java based blogging program,
where you can create and publish your own weblog on your own website.
Thingamablog does NOT require a third-party blogging host,
a cgi/php enabled web host, or a MySQL database.
In fact, all you need to setup, and manage, a blog with Thingamablog is
a FTP, SFTP, or network access to a web server.

I suggest looking at LiveJournal and Blogger. If one of them looks like
what you want -- there are other sites using their software, and some
might be more to your taste.

It really depends what you're looking for. Blogger is fine for basic
use, but if you want to password-protect your blog, you can't do it
without hosting it on your own webspace. LiveJournal is more
configurable than Blogger, but there is no security-level between
"let anyone read my blog" and "only let registered users who are on
my friends list read my blog". Others, such as WordPress, are
extremely flexible, but you need your own webspace (and in some cases
MySQL etc) to use them. Some allow you to post via email or from your
desktop in other ways. Some allow photos as part of the blog; for
others you have to link to your photos and host the pictures
elsewhere. I would suggest you think through your criteria - how much
control do you want over the various aspects of your blog
(presentation, archiving, security/privacy, etc) and post again with
your specifics, as there is no one blog site/software that will be
right for everyone.

Actually, there is; you can set different filters for various categories
of people.

There was one site (don't know if it's still going) which insisted that
all users be anonymous.

But they still need to be registered with LJ themselves, right? A lot
of people aren't going to read because they can't be bothered to
register.

It's a good service, just not suitable for my needs.
