Best free AV s-ware?

I have a Dell system with XP Home.

I've used AVG for years and I've been satisfied. However, I will now have to
upgrade to AVG 8.0 Free and I keep reading about lots of problems with it.

I've read somewhere that Avira is excellent.

Can someone confirm or suggest alternatives?

I don't have issues with AVG 8. I've disabled the web links and not
installed the email scan. Other than that its okay, its a bit more
picky than 7.5, but that might be better.

Avast seems to be a good suggestion by others.
NOD32 seems also to be suggested.

The free Avira AntiVir is an excellent replacement and is *better* than AVG.

True, but AVG 8 is OK. Avira does something funny which keeps the ZA
tray icon continually active. No big deal but I switched to AVG 8. No
problems with it.

Maybe re-evaluating the usage of your 3rd party fw apps would be in order.

Be aware though it uses absurd and outrageous statements in its pop up
adverts that follow antivirus updates. The one i got this morning told me
that Mr Hacker was getting my emails, my credit cards and my bank account
details unless i upgrade to their security suite.

Presumably you're talking about the adware popup that degenerates
Avira's AntiVir into nagware (I say Avira's AntiVir because this
marketin crap wasn't in AntiVir before Avira got their hands on it).
You can get rid of the nag dialog by making sure avnotify.exe doesn't
load. One way is to rename it (although I've read that you might still
need a zero-byte file named avnotify.exe). Instead, and when I trialed
Avira's AntiVir, I used local security policies to define a software
restriction that would block avnotify.exe from loading. No more nags
during an update. If you use any security product, like a firewall
(Comodo v3 or Online Armor, for examples), that includes HIPS (host
intrusion protection system) then you can have it block avnotify.exe
from loading.
