i am looking for a computer in the 5 and 6 hundred dollar range and am
looking at compac and dell. dell seems much more expensive and has
less options to choose from when you are customizing the computer.
Compaq lets you build your computer piece by peice so i can get
exactly what i need. if you have any strong feeling or suggestions on
this please email me at (e-mail address removed)

If you can get them in the USA get a,"Medion".Here in Europe they are
one of the best,"Bang-for-buck" buys. You can get them from,"PC world"
or would you believe,"Toy-r-us".Their build quality and features are
superb as is their backup/support.
HTH :)

No. I will tell you here that you are much better off with Dell than
Compaq.

I dunno about Dell, but compaq are a pain in the ass when it comes to
compatibility and replacement parts.
I guess this is a deliberate marketing ploy to ensure you fork out top
dollar for brand name parts when you wanna upgrade/replace something..

(I spent forever once trying to get RAM that was compatible with a compaq
deskpro!)

You are far better either:

1. buying the parts and building the computer yourself
or
2. buying the parts and having someone in a local computer store put it
together for you

Either way, you won't be stuck with crappy prebuilt systems which often need
special replacement parts from the manufacturer. You get exactly what you want,
and if you shop around for the parts, usually get it cheaper than what dell or
compaq will charge you. If I take about 3 weeks to shop around for deals on
parts, I can usually build a desktop system that is equal of not better than the
prebuilt ones for half to two thirds the price.
