Good day,
I would like to teach kids on money.Is there a formula that wil do the
following.
If I enter S35 it should give me a feedback of 1 x $20 , 1 X $10 and 1 X $5
The main notes to be used are $1,$2,$5,$10 and $20.

I set up the following spreadsheet to handle this:

In cell.... put....
B2 35 (or whatever dollar amount you want to split)
C4 20
C5 10
C6 5
C7 2
C8 1
B4 = INT ( $B$2 / C4 )
B5 = INT ( ( $B$2 - B4 * C4 ) / C5 )
B6 = INT ( ( $B$2 - SUMPRODUCT ( $B$4:B5 , $C$4:C5 ) ) / C6 )

Then, copy B6 to B7 and B8.
B7 should read = INT ( ( $B$2 - SUMPRODUCT ( $B$4:B6 , $C$4:C6 ) ) / C7 )
B8 should read = INT ( ( $B$2 - SUMPRODUCT ( $B$4:B7 , $C$4:C7 ) ) / C8 )

The last thing I did was highlight cells C4 to C8 (where the 20, 10, 5, 2
and 1 are) and format the cells putting a custom format of:
"x $"General (you actually type the "")
This will make the 20 appear as x $20

That's it ! Good luck. Write again if you have any problems.

As a side note, an interesting programming problem is determining there
are 162 possible solutions.

(although we know you meant the minimum number of denominations)

(Throw in pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters, and there are
471,281,825 :>)
