Hey folks,
I'm in the market for a new cdr/rw and things change so fast it's hard to
know what's what in terms all the new technology.
I've looked for comparative tests of the latest models but it seems that
even the review sites are fed up with rehashing the same articles.
Is there anyone that can either point me to a good round-up/comparison test
or tell me straight out what I should be looking at?
Thanks!

Sure the SuperDuper5000XZM10001-BX.
Be sure to get the turbo with the blue condensor not the regular one.

Actually Id get a DVD writer since it does both thats what most get.
If you live in some usual region where its hard to get DVD writers
then get the old standby CD burner Liteon.

I actually bought two of them when they were on sale all the time last
year and still have an unopened one as a backup.

However if you get a DVD writer the NEC is very inexpensive and
excellent. Other good ones are Liteons. If you want to spend more
Pioneers and Plextors are excellent. I think the NEC was $65 or so at
Newegg nowadays. Youll have to check cause theyve been pushing some
prices up and down at many online places. Its like that article I read
when people noticed that different people logging onto Amazon a year
or two ago - saw different prices for various things. It was part of
a more narrowly targeted pricing strategy. They then talked about the
possibility of vending machines that raised their prices automatically
when days were hot or times when they sold more soda - you know the
old supply and demand thing. It seems like they are doing that now
raising and dropping prices herky jerky almost every few days it seems
on some items. Like they have some new AI program controlling
pricing. The Chaintech VNF4 went up from 116 I think to 129 at many
places but thats nothing - the Gigabyte was like 135 at many places
and was jacked up suddenly to 175 at ZZF and I think it crept up to
139 at newegg or 145. The AMD 3000 retail 939 is really a roller
coaster at newegg too.

I'm looking for a cdr/rw 52x for raw cd writing speed - not a dvd.
Thanks anyhow.

I just picked up one of those 24.00 Liteon Drives. Works great. Gets a bit
loud when she's wound up, but not bad. Overall, I've had great luck with
Liteon drives. I've got 4 of various models and they all perform great.

Yeah they were the drive to get - it was cheap and excellent and so
popular that they kept up with copy protection and other issues. Since
then I dont think things have changed since no one really cares about
CD burners anymore. I dont think theres any big new development being
done with those drives anymore. Its all dvd now. Even thats getting
old. Thats already commoditized - most are decent now and the NEC is
dirt cheap and excellent. No big incentive anymore for big
developments. Maybe dual layer will eventually fall in price and
become the standard but Im not even sure of that. Who knows everyone
may just kind of lose interest in the DVD format before the dual layer
disks become cheap like CDRs and regular DVDRs did.

The next thing will be blu ray or the other technology so you can
hopefully record HDTV shows though theres the whole DRM issue.

The only problem I had with Liteons was that if I burn SVCDs over 32x
speeds I can get artifacts , problems at the end of the disks. I
solved that by just limiting the speed to 24-32x which is no big deal
with me.

I've used probably 10-15 different drives in my builds over the past couple
of years, and IMHO the LiteOn drives are the best at any price, much less at
the $25 or so you can buy them now. Out of the 25 or so I bought in 2004, I
only had one RMA. They are fast and accurate, and seem to burn correctly on
any medium I've thrown at them.
