Best AV, with small resource usage??

Like most of you, I have tried several AV programs, both free and paid
versions. I had Trend Micro PC and it seemed like a major resource
hog. Then I read reviews and Trend did not seem to be as good as it
once was. Now I have switched to NOD32 and like it, but posters in
other threads have suggested it too is a resource hog? Is that true?

Which AV programs are considered the best to have and at the same
time, use minimal resources from the computer?

(Hey, I could have asked is AVG is doing away with their free version!

I'm no expert and I have a hi-spec PC but, I don't like resource hungry
software but, I've tried many AVs and Kaspersky AV:
(http://www.kaspersky.com - choose country top center)
to be great.

I tried NOD32 but, it was making more use of my PC than I was but, with
abit of tweaking I'm sure I could have done something about it ...

NOD32 has the best combination of detection rates and computer resource
friendliness that I know of. I found Kaspersky or AOL AVS to slow down
my machine. AntiVir is okay. Symantec Corporate Edition works much
better than the consumer version I have found. There aren't too many
more I have bothered with.

If you want a resource hog on your machine try installing Oracle.
Including all its associated crap I am giving up nearly 300 MB of
memory usage.

Have tried KAV 6.0.1.411 MP1. Seems to use less resources on my PC then
6.0.0.303.

What are they using, 286s?

The latest NOD32 version 2.7 is about a 10 to 11MB DL.

I have all kinds of PCs from a dual Pentium Pro to a P4 running XP but
my favorite is a 1g Athlon running Win98SE that I built in 1999.

I just installed NOD32 2.7 on that one and it's anything but a resource
hog. It's a little bigger than previous versions but they've added some
new useful features and it's a little faster overall than the previous
version. I have Kaspersky installed for running occasional on demand
scans but it takes forever to run.
