can someone recommend the best option for archiving in the market right

against tape drives. does anyone know the adv. and disadv. or is there
any better option in the market?

Really depends on the detail of what you need to archive,
particularly the volume and frequency of updates.

You should also consider DVD-RAM and even
just multiple DVD media if its just your photos etc.

Impossible to say when you dont say
anything about what you want to archive.

Tape is generally well past its useby date
now for personal desktop system archiving.

Thanks Rod. Am working on a small budget and want to do archiving for a
school project. School pictures of graduation day, IM sessions between
teachers and students (text), reports (some graphics), some video and
voice traffic. I think DVD will be very expensive for a small budget.
thanks

If you shop around you can find great deals on DVD media now. I think the
best was at Best Buy a month or so ago with a price of $4.99US for a 50
pack. That is the way to go with your type of needs IMO.

DVD or an external USB/Firewire hard drive are the best options. Both can
be had for a relatively low cost. Other proprietary optical formats and
tape are not suited to home use and small budgets.

In that case I'd personally use DVD-RAM, more than
one copy, and a couple of copys on DVD+R as well.

That way you will always be able to read the archive
in the future and can move it to some other format in
a decade or so once things move on.

What total volume are you looking at GB wise ?

It'll be cheaper than anything else except a couple of hard drives.

The hard drive route wont necessarily be as convenient in the future.
