Does anyone have any opinions on the best antivirus program to use
with Windows XP? For years, I have used Norton. Right now I am using
Norton 2004. Recently, however, I discovered that in order to install
and update Norton 2004 properly, I must turn on 8.3 file name
creation, which causes a small performance hit on NTFS.

So, I'm looking for something with the same or better performance, and
especially something that was specifically designed for XP (or at
least NTFS file systems) so that I can use it even after turning off
8.3 file name creation.

TIA
Ken

Ken;
Honestly, I've only ever used two AV programs, McCrappy and AVG.
I won't bore you with the McCrappy story. I paid $ for it and when I needed
it, it did not work and I had to pay some more $. I am currently using the
FREE AVG version, no problems.

Hey Wes, I use AVG. We have something in common after all.

Really, I have used McAfee and Norton, as well as Trend Pc-cillin. Trend is
the only one that didn't try to take over my PC. AVG does the virus thing
quite well and don't cost anything. I'll stick with AVG for now.

I've used NAV for 8 years and am very satisfied, but to each his own. I have
never been infected with any kind of virus. I just completed a scan of my
entire hard drive - 116,000+ files - in 13 minutes and 10 seconds. NAV and
other Norton products cost money, theoretically, but if you pay them, you're
silly. I wait until tax time when they're free (after rebates.) I don't
think I understand what the OP is talking about, since I have not noticed an
appreciable performance hit from NAV.

Tom;
All kinds of posts about some kind of recent glitch with Norton.
I haven't paid enough attention to tell you what it's about.
Some kind of performance deal.

I have used quite a few of them and AVG and EZ Antivirus seem to less of a
toll on the OS and does a great job in detection.
