Being asked to save

If I open a Word (the XP version) document, merely read it without knowingly
making any changes to it and then try to close it, I'm asked whether I want
to save my changes, though I'm not aware of having made any. Why is that?

Could be that you have some fields in your document that are being updated,
like date fields. If Word updates them your document has changed even though
you did not type or correct anything.

Thanks very much for your help. Smart tags were enabled and disabling them
seems to have solved the problem.
