It's time to get a new case and I'm looking for a tower without a
power supply as I intend to supply my own, something a little over 400
watts. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

I too am looking. I'm leaning toward those that house the larger
120mm fans with front Firewire, USB 2, and headphone connections.
Unfortunately it looks like gray or black is in vogue along with mid
towers and dumb colored lights. Have you looked at Antec Plus 1080?

I've looked at the Antec SX 1240 and the AOpen H 700. I'm thinking of
the Antec because it does come without a power supply and it's a full
tower. I've got scsi drives and need space for cooling. The Antec
you mentioned is nice but I don't want a door and I'm not sure if it
is removable.

That's my biggest nitpick about today's cases. Too many of them put
doors on them which hinders quick access to the cdrom drives.
Luckily I have an older Antec tower before doors became vogue. My
second PC is just a cheap Chenbro Gaming Bomb but it is actually
designed quite well and has no stupid door either. I can see doors may
help with noise levels but not enough to actualy ever wanting one on
any PC I own.

I think the doors are more for looks than anything else. Of course
they can be removed, but that usually spoils the appearance.

The door on my 22" mid tower stays open more than closed anyway.

Some may do it for appearances sake but there are practical reasons for
case doors. In a server environment, as one example, you don't want 'easy
access' to CD drives by unauthorized personnel.

Another common problem, especially for families with small children, is
keeping little Johnny's fingers off the CD drives and power button.

You're right, of course. Since I'm the only one with access to my
computer, they aren't things I have to be concerned about.

Another good reason is: The door aids in keeping dust out of your optical
drives. The exhaust fans suck air and dust into the case through any and all
openings, no matter how small.
The dust can eventually kill the drives.

You're right, of course. Since I'm the only one with access to my

Same here, which is why I hadn't thought about the kiddies till my brother
in law asked about computer desks with doors.

I don't know if it's an 'electric field' thing or what but it seems that
the power button just naturally attracts kiddie fingers.

But the power button usually sits outside of the door area anyway.
Someone mentioned they keep dust out of the cdrom drives which is a
valid reason for a door but I will still never buy a case with a door
because I want quick access to my cdrom drives and fanbus.

Depends on the case. It's inside the door on my Antec/Chieftec/Chenming
SX-1040 series case and it's lockable as well. My old el-cheapo no name has
a vertical sliding door that covers it. Not lockable but it can be left
slid down with no 'door' swung open and in the way.

That's why they make all sorts of cases.

Unfortunately it also applies to sneaky landlords and neighbors with
keys to the house (and their kids)!

I ended up buying everything I said I didn't want; an Antec 1080AMG
which has a door and is charcoal gray. I got it for $122 shipped
which is cheaper than a beige box like the Chieftec and the purchase
of a separate power supply and a bunch of fans for cooling. The Antec
has a really great 430 watt power supply and comes with three fans and
rails so I'm pretty happy with the deal. If anyone else is
interested, I purchased at Page Computers which has always done a good
job with anything I've purchased. I ordered on Sunday and received it
today with their free shipping- I don't think you can beat that.
Thanks for all of the help and advice.

I think you made a good choice with the Antec P/S and case. Maybe you
can remove the unwanted door. Page Computers has been around a long
long time and I'd call them a trusted vendor.
