I run Mandrake-Linux + KDE desktop on a Pentium-I MMX 233MHz w/ 128MB RAM
and it's just a tad slow for my taste, but definitely doable. :-)

I got Mandrake 9.2 happy running on PII 200 with only 64Mb RAM and 4gB hdd
WAS ONLY SLOW WHEN i MULTI TASKED... BUT STILL AS YOU SAY DO-ABLE

Mandrake isn't slow...KDE and Gnome are slow. Use a decent wm that
doesn't suck the life out of memory.

You can (and should) use a small window manager.
BlackBox or XFCE would run OK on this machine you have.

The machine I use is a 5.5 year-old Compaq Presario
with 192 MB of memory ....

Using Debian GNU/Linux, only the initial KDE start-up sequence
is a bit slow, but still acceptable ....

After the initial KDE start-up, everything seems to open
fairly quickly and run well, .e.g. , no problems ....

Exceptions that do not open quickly are Mozilla-Firefox
and Mozilla-Thunderbird, but these also are slow to load
on the same machine under Win98_SE, but under either OS
after initial load, both run well ....

I also use the XFCE and Fluxbox window managers,
and both of these are much faster at starting up
when switching users relative to the KDE start-up times,
but post start-up, I can't tell much difference
in using applications ....

I forgot to include that this machine runs at 250 MHz ....

Thus, the comparison of Hardware is similar ....

i run Damn Small and Slackware 10 on a 500 mhz / 192 meg RAM. it runs
pretty well, but i use a lightweight window manager -- Ion3. i also use
small apps whenever possible, except for Mozilla and gnome-terminal. i
trimmed some of the fat off the stock install via daemon disabling,
eliminating gettys, etc.

i also have Vector 4.0 (slack 9.1 derivative) on a pentium 100 / 64 meg
RAM. it runs ok for now, but i might replace that install with Deli
linux (slack 7.1 derivative).
