Beginner's Chess

I have put quite a bit of work in over time trying to find a decent
chess program for kids. The best i had found before was a slow dos
one, and now I have found one that might be superb.
Set to its easiest level, it plays lightning and badly, though it's
moves look sensible; ask it to look a bit further ahead and it plays
noticeably better and still fast. Nice GUI, mouse, kb options, option
to take move back (good for kiddie beginners), a smiley when it is
winning...

Tested on XP Pro; I will try it on 98SE later.

Go to C:\Program Files\app and copy all of the files to another
folder. Except stuff like uninstall.exe and uninstall.ini

Uninstall the app from C:\Program Files\app (You have now removed the
original installation files)

Does the copy still work? If yes, burn a CD, and try it on another
machine (just in case the original installation made registry changes
or installed hidden files)

Thx; I did something similar the other day when looking at yMail, but
didn't continue to the logical conclusion.

Some programmers may not be happy with this practice, after all, they
put in the installation routine for a reason. Effectively removing the
licensing agreement is probably the most significant.

I de-fluff so that I don't have hundreds of installed utilities
de-stabilising my machine. There seems to be an upper limit to how
many apps can be installed at one time (and I don't just mean an
overflowing icon cache)
 
I recently needed an uncorruptable working copy of WinHex v11.5 on a
CD. The technique worked, although when I tried to exit the program it
objected to not being allowed to write a 'recent project' file. This
did not cause any problems in subsequent use.

The reason I mention this, is because in my last post I forgot to say
I always run the 'copied' executable once in its new location. This
allows it to generate any 'INI' files it may need. Also run the help
file once, to let it create its .GID file.
 
I would recommend a chess game called 'Pawn'; it has an error adjustment
level (so you can set the amount of errors it makes), you can take back as
many moves as you like, you can set up random chess positions, etc.
