I have only just bought a flatbed scanner (Epson RX510 multifunction), soon
followed by VueScan, to scan slides. I note that the results I am getting are
uniformly unsatisfactory compared to those achieved with EpsonScan. The VS scan
screen shows a nice sharp image (I use the Sharpen option) but the Saved results
do not look anything like what I'd expect - simply not sharp, and when I don't
use the Sharpen option, the results are similarly unsharp but the brightness is
different. Am I doing something incorrect, or are these results to be expected.
?

Should I just bite the bullet and buy a Nikon 5000-ED like I originally intended
?

definitely, YES. Check Fletchers at Parramatta Westfield.

When you say not sharp do you mean the printed output or what you are seeing
on screen viewed at 100 per cent in photoshop? All scanned photographs
require some sharpening, this is an inherant problem with almost all
scanners. As a rule of thumb you could try the "unsharp mask" in Photoshop
using settings of 100 percent, 1.5 pixels and threshold of 1 just for a
general improvement.

As I said, I'm just a beginner - I don't own PS at present (can't justify the
price), just do some tweaking with IrfanView and 602Photo, and displaying with
these and my browser. I have not printed anything - just practicing scanning
some slides for web display to start with. I guess I'm naive in thinking that
what I see in my VueScan preview screen is what I should see in the resultant
image displayed on screen (and yes, I'm talking about both being viewed at as
close to the same size as possible).....

Thanks,
DS

If you haven't got Photoshop, get GIMP. It's free, and has more
functionality than you need to get started.
