I have recently updated my Mom from a DOS 1983 Toshiba
Laptop with Wordstar to a Windows XP, HP ze4500 Laptop
with OFFICE 2003 and OUTLOOK 2003!

Would anyone have suggestions for on-line beginner
training (hopefully at no-charge) for learning the basics
of Outlook 2003 and Word 2003?? Attempting to be the
instructor myself is often a complete diaster!

Unfortunately most of the instruction links I find for
Office 2003 assume folks already know how to use Office!

Thanks much in advance

I would recommend beginner books - the absolute beginner guide or visual
quick starts are both good series to use, with lots of screenshots. She can
work through the chapters as fast or slowly as she wants and easily refer
back to the books at any time she gets stuck.

"A 1983 Toshiba Laptop" - I doubt it. Perhaps 1993. The first Toshiba
laptop was the T1000, which hit the market in 1987.

You face a two stage process:
1. using a GUI
2. using the applications.

So, first start with a Windows dummies book (or similar), and then go onto
the Office, or other applications.

Find something that she does often in the old system and help her,
step-by-step, how it is done in the new system. The idea is to get her
comfortable with the universal techniques of MSFT products - eg FILE OPEN or
TOOLS OPTIONS are the same in virtually every GUI application.

And of course, F1 is invaluable for anyone, beginner or professional.

Lastly: heap congratulations on her. I know 35 year-olds who battle to
make transitions like this.
