Before Upgrading do this....

I've been asked a lot lately about how to make upgrading to Vista an easier
process, so I have compiled a short list, please include anything you feel I
left out.

Step One Your Existing OS: I recommend before doing anything else that you
scan your system for viruses and spy ware. Get rid of all that junk!
Next run system defrag. Defragmenting can take awhile to do; I set my
computer to defrag while I sleep. Defragging the system will help the system
run more smoothly and could help speed up the Vista installation process.
Also get rid of any files or programs you're not using.

Step Two Back Up Your Files: Back Up your MP3's, video files, photo's, etc..
You could do this with CD's or DVD's but I prefer using a external hard
drive, that way everything is all at one place and you're not switching disks
constantly. Also take the time at this point to look for the disks to your
programs, in case you need to reinstall them after Vista is finished
installing.

Step Tree Download Vista Upgrade Advisor: This will tell you what devices
Vista will accept and which will need to be replaced. There may be some
devices and programs that will no doubt need new drivers or updates,
Microsoft may have the drivers already, but you're best off to go to the
manufacturer’s web site to get the latest software. Save whatever you
download to a disk or external hard drive.

Step Four Vista Install: This is pretty simple, pop in the disk and follow
the on screen instructions, if something goes wrong Vista will undo any
changes and restore XP.

Step Five Restoring your Files and Programs: Place your stored MP3 and other
files to a folder(s) of your choice.

An excellent synopsis but you need a step in between two and three.
Uninstall all antivirus, antispyware, firewall, disk utility, system
utility, and any other programs that use low level kernel access to do their
thing. They may cause the Vista upgrade to fail and at the least will cause
problems with Vista. Once Vista is installed you can install Vista versions
of the same programs.

Also, before Step Four -- make an image

Thank you for pointing that out, could also come after the Vista Advisor
which would advise you to do this as well. Thank You. I hate uninstalling
anti-virus software especially Norton and Mcaffee, getting splashed by hot
coffee is more pleasant than uninstalling those programs!
