Hello everyone,

I've had some problems in the past with KCC replication from one site to
another when I transfer the FSMO's from the primary DC to another DC making
it the primary DC. Under Sites and Services, those NTDS (automatically
generated) links that are linking to the primary DC have problems
replicating. What is the proper procedure on switching FSMO's to another DC
in the forest and does it have any affect to the NTDS links under Sites and
Services? If it does, how do you address those changes?

Thank you

How to move the roles:

No, it shouldn't. Those links are created and monitored by the KCC and are
simply dependent on correctly configured sites and DNS.

If the KCC cannot replicate with a DC, it will create connection objects to
other DCs to ensure consistency. It only starts to struggle with this when
there's hundred of sites, and multiple domain partitions.

Thanks for the information... So after I dcpromo my first dc out of my
domain, how does active directory know who the new authoritative DNS for
zone such and such? Is that something I need to change?

Thank you

It doesn't - you have to configure this.

Basically, you'll need to setup DNS on another server, and configure all
clients to point to that server. You'll also need to make another DC a GC
(more than on is best).

This may help, with some ideas and instructions:

Ignore the fact that this is talking about replacing a single DC - lots of
that info. is relevant in other scenarios too.

The first link has a link to a how-to configure a GC.
