beeping after disk check

After using Nortone System works 2006 to do a disk check and doing what
it recommended with some sort of re-working the partition table, my PC
will not boot correctly. If I do a restart, it hangs where it says
"Verifying DMI Pool, boot from CD". If I do a complete shut down and
restart, then it boot up OK, but in either case there is a constant
beeping, 2 tones back and forth like an ambulance. I tried a system
restore but nothing changed. Any suggestions?

The constant beeping is an audible code from your motherboard to tell
you that some hardware has failed. Refer to your motherboard manual for
the meaning of your specific beep code, or look up your BIOS here:

If you have an OEM machine (Dell, Compaq, Sony, etc.) call the OEM's
tech support.

There are some things that even a seasoned computer expert
will not permit Norton utilities to do. One of them is to
let it muck around with the physical parameters of the system.
The issues presented here have nothing to do with Windows XP
but with how bios tables interact with the hardware and the
"verifying DMI pool" message is a very ominous sign. One thing
to do right now is to back up all of the important stuff that is
on the hard drive and be prepared to do a low-level format of
the hard drive and a clean re-install of Windows XP. And forget
about Norton.
