Just as Windows is finishing it's booting process so that
I can begin to use the computer, I get a single Beep. I'm
guessing that means something isn't right. What steps
should I take to solve this?

One beep may or may not be a problem. Your owner's manual (either the
computer or the motherboard) should tell you what it means. Generally,
multiple beeps (short and long) would be a code that indicates the
nature of the problem. Or, something may display on screen.

Do you have any other symptoms of a problem?

I have no other simptoms except maybe I should point out that it seems to take a relatively long time for my firewall and Kodak Easy Share apps to show up in the system tray during the booting process.

Jack,

The beeps (whatever their meaning) are to diagnose hardware problems.
Long startup times are probably caused by software.

Try this site for a pc health check:

Check for viruses:

Check for spyware. Use HijackThis, Spybot S&D, and expert advice at
SWI Forums (all free). Complete instructions are available at:

HijackThis will also give a list of all programs that are starting
automatically. If you need to research that further, get Startup
Control Panel (free) from <http://www.mlin.net/>.
