Beating my head against a brick wall with Java and Ms VM

David M Wicker

I've read and tried to implement all the steps in the faq at
http://n6hb.org/s-a/JAVA-ts.htm and I've examined every post on the
subject in the group, to no avail

I'm running win 2000 sp3 and ie 6.0.2800.11061C
(i tried sp4 but after a few days and a few probs un installed. The
java problem existed before this

I've had the grey, instal jvm screen for some time, but thought it was
because i'd excluded it with the security settings. When I double
checked this wasn't the case, I just had a non functional jvm

Results of trying to implement the 3 steps
1 can install 3805 fine, when i go to windows update there is no
update available (other than installing sp4?)

2 o i downloaded 3810 from your link, on installation I get:

"The msvm you are attempting to install is a protected system
component & can only be installed with a later release of the os or
sp."

3 sun java downloaded and installed j2se 1.4.2, which
seemed to work fine

java console appears in tools, however showing as 1.4.1_03
if it makes a difference:
Proxy Configuration: Manual Configuration
Proxy: http=webcache.bt.net :8080
Proxy Overrides: x.x.x.x

In tools/options/advanced, sun java is ticked and i have restarted

when i do your test for java, I get 2 empty boxes surrounded by your
text

I even went on to dl and install:
J2SE v 1.4.2 with NetBeans IDE v 3.5 Cobundle

I'm now in deep , way over my head, and no progress

any recommendations?

Reread the instructions on n6hb.org again. That is the error you will receive
if you attempt to install the update intended for another OS (Windows 2000 is
a special case). MANY people have reported success with this routine.

By "work fine" do you mean that the console appears in tools, or that Java
applets now work?

I think you are on the right track. One more thing to check though...
In Windows Control Panel, open "Java Plug-in." Click the Browser tab, and
ensure that "Microsoft Internet Explorer" is selected. If not, select the
checkbox, click Apply, then reboot.
I even went on to dl and install:
J2SE v 1.4.2 with NetBeans IDE v 3.5 Cobundle
Irrelevant - forget that.

I followed it to the letter and downloaded only the 2000 fix
